Left once again feeling like I was having teachers-block with regards to what to teach my adult class tonight, I decided last min. to attempt to do some sort of debate. I prepared a topic and various opinions for them to work off of and headed into class. I soon scratched my initial topic, seeing that it was too risque (prostitution) and moved on to gambling. They seemed to be a little more talkative than usual, so we proceeded onward. I gave them each different opinions and asked them to write a few reasons why "their" opinions were valid. After finishing, we began our discussion and things were going pretty well. Each was taking their turn talking and it came to be one of our middle schooler's turn, Betty. She looked at us all, and did her usual giggle and head shake, only this time it wasn't just me encouraging her to actually speak. The 3 upper-level adults were also trying to get her to speak. You see, there are 2 middle school students that ended up in our class just because they don't have time for the regular middle school class. They don't usually speak quite as much, due to being younger and shyer. Tonight, however, even Susan, the other student had spoken and contributed. But....Betty wasn't having any of it. She just smiled and said she didn't want to in Corean. She was sweet about it. I'll give her that. I think she was just feeling a little intimidated. But, earlier in the evening I'd taught them the expression, "just because"....meaning, for no reason. So upon asking her why she didn't want to talk she proudly looked at us all and exclaimed, "just because...."
